Helpful Tips for Diabetics During the Holiday and Vacation Season
- Don’t skip meals and/or snacks. Do not try to “save up” calories because skipping meals will lead to erratic blood sugar levels.
- Plan AHEAD! The more you know about what's going to happen, the better you can plan for good diabetes care.
- Have a very small portion of a regular dessert with your meal. Digesting the dessert with the rest of the meal will help prevent a big spike in your blood sugar levels.
- Vacations don’t give us license to skip exercise routines. Sticking with your regular exercise will help stabilize your bloods sugar levels.
- Sit far from buffet tables, candy dishes and cookie-laden platters.
- Chew sugarless gum or a breath mint to prevent picking.
- Use less sugar when preparing your family get-together favorites.
- Prevent fatigue by getting eight hours of sleep each night.
- Drink water. Water is a healthy, no-calorie beverage.
